Our Mission

Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation-Australia’s (IPOA) mission is to elevate the rights of Indigenous Peoples to participate and be recognised at regional, national and international levels enabling self-determination and to drive Indigenous decision making for the purpose of assertion of Indigenous rights.

  • About Us

Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation-Australia (IPOA) is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the rights of Indigenous Peoples to participate and be recognised at regional, national, and international United Nations forums.

IPOA serves as the peak body for Indigenous rights, governed by a national board comprising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives.

Indigenous Peoples’ Organisation-Australia (IPOA) is at the forefront of advocating for the rights and recognition of Indigenous Peoples across Australia and on global platforms. As a not-for-profit entity, IPOA operates with a clear mission: to ensure that Indigenous voices are heard and valued at regional, national, and international forums, particularly within the United Nations system.

  • Our History

The Indigenous Peoples' Organisation-Australia (IPOA) was founded in 2016 as a direct response to funding cuts by the Abbott Federal Government, which resulted in the removal of small grants that supported Indigenous participation in United Nations activities.

In a bid to ensure Indigenous perspectives remained visible on the global stage, former participants came together to establish the IPOA as a voluntary, member-driven organisation.

Since its formation, the IPOA has grown to encompass over 360 individuals and organisations, advocating for Indigenous voices at significant international events, including COP26, COP27, and COP28.

The IPOA is also actively pursuing Australia's participation in COP31, underscoring its commitment to creating a platform for Indigenous Australians in global discussions and decision-making processes.
