  • The Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP)

    IPOA led Australian Indigenous delegations to EMRIP’s and presented on key topics impact Australia’s First Nations, including the Voice to Parliament, following the Statement from the Heart.

  • United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)

    IPOA annually supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to attend and provide expert advice and recommendations on Indigenous issues to the UNPFII and supports Indigenous delegates to build capacity, prepare and disseminate information on Indigenous issues and address the six mandated focus areas of economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.

  • CANZUS Meetings

    CANZUS represents the collaborative effort of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States to address pressing regional and global issues through joint Ministerial meetings.

    In 2021, 2022, and 2023, the Indigenous Peoples' Organisation-Australia (IPOA) was invited to present on significant topics, contributing valuable Indigenous perspectives on Climate Change, Economic Development, Women, and COVID-19.

  • UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

    IPOA supported Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Issues Australian Visit to Australia. IPOA assisted with the extension of her visit beyond the initially proposed visit to Queensland, to also include WA, NT, QLD, TSI, NSW, VIC and ACT, during her two-week review of Australia’s human rights compliance with relation to Australia’s First Nations People.

  • Engagement in the UNFCCC

    IPOA advocates for First Nations through participation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

    IPOA abides by the principles of the
    United Nations Declaration on the
    Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)
    as the minimum standards of
    Indigenous decision making and campaigns for its implementation.

  • First Nations participation in United Nations processes

    IPOA supports First Nations People to take the lead in UN processes to advocate for their own rights and ensure community perspectives and needs are heard. IPOA will sponsor a delegation of First Nations leaders to attend COP29 in November 2024.
