  • Save our Baaka

    Owen Snr Whyman, a Barkindji Malyangapa man from Wilcannia is an active community leader and respected Elder in his community.

    Uncle Owen is calling for urgent action to address water shortages and mismanagement, water quality and environmental issues and to replenish the river’s flow.

    “Baaka means ‘river, we are river people, I am a river man” When our river is in trouble, we all are in trouble.

  • Arawerr (Soapy Bore)

    The community is in dire need of access to safe and reliable water supplies. Electricity outages also impact on the pumping of bore water.

    Fences are needed around the community to protect taps from wild horses, trees planted for shade, the need for a public toilet for visitors to the community.

    The houses are inadequate for the conditions, there is need for chairs, bedding and basic goods.

    The Torres Strait communities want to raise funds for the development of a coconut husk sea wall and raised garden beds as salt water inundation of the ground is preventing traditional food gardens.
